Anthropic's October update changes how Claude is used day to day and how it's governed in regulated enterprises. The four changes that matter most, and what we'd do about each.
Anthropic's October update changes how Claude is used day to day. It also changes how it is governed in regulated enterprises. At Nexus Advisory we run our own business on Claude every day, and as a Certified Partner of the Claude Partner Network we help Swiss, UK and European organisations adopt it. Here are the four changes we think matter most, and what we'd do about each.
The biggest change of the past month is that Claude's chat and its agentic workspace, Cowork, now share a single entry point. Sessions run in the cloud, so the same work carries across desktop, web and mobile. You can ask a question, then have Claude act on files, connectors and workflows, all in one conversation.
We moved Nexus to the unified setup straight away and use it every day. The practical difference is that nobody has to decide upfront whether a task belongs in chat or in Cowork.
Start with your instructions, personal and organisational. Ones written for chat cover tone and format. Agentic work also needs rules for files, connected systems and anything that changes the outside world, like sending, posting or scheduling. The admin side is simple: enable Chat and Code Execution under Capabilities, then switch on unified Chat and Cowork. Role-based access lets you phase the rollout.
For most work, Sonnet 5.5 is the better default. It's faster, more efficient and generally good enough. That was Anthropic's guidance at the briefing, and it matches what my team and I see every day: across client delivery, research and our own operations, we rarely need to reach for Opus. Opus still earns its place on the hardest reasoning and build tasks, but it shouldn't be everyone's default.
Two admin changes support this. Sessions now return to the organisation's default model each time, not only on first use, so the default you set is the one people actually use. And a new Efficient Mode limits a role to Sonnet and Haiku. It suits chat-heavy roles where Opus spend isn't justified, but set it per role, not across the whole organisation.
Our advice: make Sonnet the org default, keep Opus for the people who need it, and check the spend reports after a month.
For banks, wealth managers and other regulated firms, the enterprise updates are significant. The Compliance API now covers Chat, Cowork (remote and local), Claude Code, Artifacts, Office Agents and custom instructions. More than 100 partner integrations, including eDiscovery and DLP, plug into it.
Inference hooks are now generally available. They let you check prompts and tool calls against your own policy before anything reaches Claude. Uploaded skills and plugins are now security-scanned by default, with an approval flow for new uploads.
In Switzerland and the UK this matters. Firms working under FINMA's outsourcing and operational-risk expectations, or the FCA's equivalents, need evidence they can put in front of a regulator, and these features produce it. They also leave room to build: firm-specific policy hooks, links into existing surveillance and records systems, and reporting a compliance function will sign off.
One thing to check now. If you have DLP or SIEM rules on Claude activity, the activity feed has swapped file names for IDs, so those rules may have stopped matching.
Claude's Salesforce and Workday integrations keep getting tighter. Users can now update records, pull reports and file expenses without leaving Claude. For sales, HR and finance teams, that puts Claude inside the system of record rather than drafting around it.
Both integrations are in beta, and the Salesforce or Workday admin has to apply for access. Build that lead time into any plan, and pilot with one team before promising a wider rollout.
Nexus Advisory helps organisations across Switzerland, the UK and Europe set up Claude properly: rollout, governance and the integrations that make it pay back. If any of this is on your list, get in touch.
